Pro Profile: Niels Meyer
Where are you based?
I spend my winters in Idaho and move up to Washington for the summers.
What are your favorite outdoor sports?
My favorite sports are skiing, alpine climbing, mountain biking and surfing.
What’s your career now and what inspired you to go after it?
I am currently working as a professional mountain guide. I had an inkling while at college that I wanted to work in the outdoor industry but I was pursuing a career in organic agriculture. Right before I graduated from college I realized I wanted to spend my life in the mountains and got an internship with Sun Valley Trekking in Idaho. After working with them for a few months I realized that I wanted to pursue a career as a mountain guide.
Tell us about one of your best days on the job:
One of my best days on the job was climbing and skiing Hyndman Peak in Idaho. Our client pushed his physical ability getting to the top and we had an amazing ski down the peak and back to the hut. He was so grateful afterwards and sincerely told us that he had just had the best experience of his life.
What’s the best thing about working in the Outdoor Industry?
The best part of working in the outdoor industry is the mountain culture. It is very supportive and filled with interesting people. It doesn’t hurt that I get to spend all my time in the mountains either.
What’s one of your bucket list items?
One of my bucket list items is spending a year in Chamonix focused on skiing, climbing, and living the European lifestyle.
What pieces of gear do you love right now and would recommend to others?
Right now I’m loving my Dynafit TLT 6 ski boots, my K2 Annex 108 skis with Dynafit Radical ST bindings, and my La Sportiva Trango Cube GTX boots.
