Pros

  • Packable (18 x 9 x 9in”)
  • Oversized hood fits a standard pillow perfectly
  • Removable top allows for conversion into a comforter increasing versatility
  • Nylon shell provides protection against condensation
  • Personalized zippers on either side of bag for thermal regulation

Cons

  • Despite how packable the bag is, it would still take up a large amount of volume for a long backpacking trip.
  • Not very warm if the temperatures drop below the lower limit of the bag (30 °F)
  • A taller person will need a longer bag

My fiancé, dog, and I used the KSB double sleeping bag for several car camping trips last fall in Leavenworth and Terrabone, Oregon.  The weather in the high desert is incredibly variable and we had to be prepared for everything.  During our trips, we experience overnight lows of 25 – 35 ° F, which was at the lower end of the bag’s range.  Despite the cold temperatures, the bag kept us warm throughout the night and chilly mornings.

Fit

My fiancé and I are both around 5’7, 130 pounds and we both had plenty of room to maneuver in this sleeping bag.  The bag is 72 inches long and would comfortably fit someone up to six feet tall.  In addition to this, the bag fits perfectly in the 6-foot bed of my Toyota Tacoma.  The built-in hood was perfect for a full-sized pillow while still allowing you enough room to engulf yourself in it for a little bit extra warmth.

Warmth

The KSB bag contains 650-fill-power white duck down and is rated to 30 °F.  The bag was very comfortable in 35 – 40 °F temps, but when we experienced nights on the lower end of the bag’s limit (25-30 °F), the bag was slightly too cold for my partner.  The bag would perform well in warmer temperatures due to the fact that it can be unzipped and used as a quilt.  The bag also includes a pad sleeve, which allows for one to insert two individual sleeping bad or a double pad, which will provide further insulation if needed and prevents the bag from sliding off the pad due to the integration of the two units.

Durability

The bag has a DWR coated nylon shell, which offers abrasion resistance and protects the 650 fill down from condensation.  During my experience with the bag, ice crystals did form on top of this shell, but did not penetrate the down.

Size/Weight

I only used this bag for car supported camping, but this bag would also work for short backpacking trips or longer treks supported by porters or mules.  The bag packs down to 18 x 9 x 9in” and is 4 pounds, 11.2 ounces, which is perfect for short excursions.  The bag is slightly too heavy and bulky for a light and fast through-hike where every ounce matters, but ultimately, that is not what it is designed for.

Final Word

This is an extremely comfortable three-season sleeping bag that fits two people very comfortably, the bag has well thought out features including draft covers and two-way zippers on each side that allow for each individual to regulate their own body temperature without affecting the other.  I was personally a huge fan of the oversized hood, which comfortably fit a large pillow.  The bag is spacious and allows for plenty of room to move around or add a blanket if you get too cold.
