But many of us take this fascination with gear and bring it into the frontcountry with us. Summary

The Rune 22 isn’t going to help you send your next project or set a new FKT. It probably won’t make you a better employee or get you a raise. But it will satisfy that gearhead itch to get a seriously quality piece of gear that you will love using day in and day out. Your stuff will be secure; the things you need will be at the ready, and you won’t have that weird back sweat stain from riding your bike to work. Actually, there is a good chance part of that stain will still be there, but I would bet it won’t be as bad.

Pros

  • Great size
  • Simple and streamlined

Cons

  • Could be too small for some

I’ve been using Gregory’s Rhune 22 pack for just over a month now and I absolutely love it. It is the perfect size for me; it is streamlined, and you can tell a backpacking company made it because it carries so well. If you are in the market for a laptop bag, I dare say, “These bags are perfect.”

Fit/Comfort

Like I said, you can tell that this pack was made by a company who has been making backpacks for almost 50 years. It fits so securely and snuggly but breathes well, even when bike commuting.

Look/Style

The Rune 22 is very simple. There aren’t any compression straps dangling off it anywhere and the material is sleek and clean. I think it is great looking, but I like a more minimalistic footprint.

Features

The backpanel is great; very comfortable and breathable. The stretchy pocket on the shoulder strap isn’t noticeable when you aren’t using it, but it is the perfect size for airpods or a little snack. The large zipper pulls are awesome (I don’t know why every pack doesn’t have those)! It can fit the new Macbook Pro 16” (which is what I have so that’s a big WIN). I can honestly say that this is the only backpack I’ve ever used where the pockets all made sense. Usually you either want an extra pocket or are confused at the 18 zippered enclosures inside a bag, but the Rhune has simple utilitarian pockets. It’s almost as if the people who designed the bag knew what people would be using it for [audible gasp]! And as if Gregory wasn’t already giving us all the bells and whistles, they made sure to make all these bells and whistles out of recycled polyester. BOOYAH!

Weight/Packability

The bag packs great. It’s not handling huge loads or anything, but it manages to stay sleek whether it is full or not. Even without compression straps, I have never felt anything jostling around inside the pack while walking or biking with it.

Durability/Construction

I haven’t put this bag through a big stress test or anything, but it has held by computer in it everyday for a month through commuting, biking, and traveling. The fabric is quality and let’s be honest, Gregory stuff is always quality.

The Final Word

The Rune 22 isn’t going to help you send your next project or set a new FKT. It probably won’t make you a better employee or get you a raise. But it will satisfy that gearhead itch to get a seriously quality piece of gear that you will love using day in and day out. Your stuff will be secure; the things you need will be at the ready, and you won’t have that weird back sweat stain from riding your bike to work. Actually, there is a good chance part of that stain will still be there, but I would bet it won’t be as bad.
