ProView – Nite Ize Radiant 314 Rechargeable Lantern+ Power Bank

Nite Ize kept things simple and effective in their design of the 314 Lantern – it has one button, one flap with input/output, a clip at the top and a functional light diffusing storage bag. The minimalism lends itself to a user-friendly experience in this small but mighty lantern.

Summary

The 314 Lantern from NiteIze is small but powerful, with thoughtful features like the amber light mode, light-diffusing storage bag with charging cord pocket, and ability to help recharge devices when their batteries start to get low. A slightly more robust battery for charging external devices would really solidify this feature, but overall, I enjoy all that this lantern has to offer and will continue to use it regularly on camping ventures.

Features

Four Light Settings

This lantern features three white LED light settings as well as an amber light setting. The brightest white light is just that — bright! It easily illuminated a large outdoor camping shelter on its own – perfect for a multi-person hangout or game session when mounted overhead. The lowest setting is the perfect level for a solo tent or user that wants the light close by. The amber light setting is the most unique and, in my opinion, the most useful function. It’s perfect for reading and seeing without being as abrasive to others (similar to the red light setting on a lot of headlamps, but with more ambiance) so that you’ve got the vision you need in the dark without blinding yourself or others. I used this mode the most often. In addition to being effective, it doesn’t use as much battery life as the high or medium settings of the lantern.

Rechargeable + Charges other Devices

The ability to recharge this lantern (with a simple Micro USB cable) is a great feature, especially if you are someone that is forever out of batteries or forgets to bring them.  Additionally, the ability to plug in another device to charge that uses a USB is convenient when you need a quick battery boost. The challenge I found with these features, however, is that, like most other rechargeable batteries, it does lose charge over time. The sooner you use it after charging it, the longer you’ll have light and power for charging other devices.

I charged the lantern and then didn’t end up using it for about seven days, at which point it wasn’t able to charge even my Apple watch more than a few percent. Even freshly charged, the most I was able to get out of it was ~90% charge (from zero) on an iPhone before the lantern’s low battery indicator light turned red and it stopped charging my device (when the lantern still has plenty of charge, it features a green indicator light). On a positive note, even when it empties it’s capacity for charging other devices, it still holds charge to provide some light if you need it. After charging my phone as much as it would allow, I was still able to get several hours of amber light even with the low battery indicator light on.

Hang Clip

The 314 Lantern has an easy, non-locking carabiner style clip at the top that makes it easy to both hang or clip to the back of a camp chair or the side of a hammock efficiently. I clipped it to a tent pole that effectively illuminated the tent and kept it out of the way.

Light Diffusing Storage Bag

When I first opened up the lantern, I thought the storage bag was a little excessive but was appreciative that it has a little pouch for the Micro USB charging cord so that I could keep the two together and not have to worry about keeping track of something else. After testing it more I realized just how awesome this storage bag is for light diffusing. In a group if you need some light to see each other, do dishes or other camp tasks, it’s really nice to have the light you need spread over more area and without the brightness/blinding factor. I especially appreciated the diffusing bag while hanging out and reading – even with the lower amber light it works really well to diffuse the light over a broader area and illuminate the whole book in a gentle way.

Final Thoughts

The 314 Lantern from NiteIze is small but powerful, with thoughtful features like the amber light mode, light-diffusing storage bag with charging cord pocket, and ability to help recharge devices when their batteries start to get low. A slightly more robust battery for charging external devices would really solidify this feature, but overall, I enjoy all that this lantern has to offer and will continue to use it regularly on camping ventures.
