ProView – Snow Peak Field Barista Set Review

I’ve got the gadgets and scales and grinders, and I’ll tell you all about them if you’re willing to listen. For another day — today I’d like to chat about coffee in the field, when there isn’t a plug for my prized espresso machine and you have to resort to old fashion ways of satisfying your caffeine addiction. Overall
4.9

Pros

  • Durable and well-made
  • Easy to Use
  • Packs down into one bag

Cons

  • Knob on kettle hard to undo

I lived in a van for four years and then switched over to a pull behind trailer. I am seasoned in the art of making coffee on the road. The Field Barista Set has everything you need to make a perfect cup, and it’s so satisfying to use. High quality, well thought-out, durable.

Performance

This is where the Field Barista Set shines. It performs beautifully. The set consists of three items, the Field Barista Kettle, the Field Barista Grinder, and the Field Barista Coffee Dip — everything you need to make the perfect pour over coffee. You boil the water over a portable stove with the stainless steel kettle. While it’s heating up, you use the stainless steel grinder with an adjustable ceramic burr (this is the kind you want for a perfectly ground bean) to grind your fresh beans and pour them into your already set up coffee drip fit with a Chemex or Hario V60 filter. Once the water is boiled, pour it on over your freshly ground beans and let the magic happen. There is a whole art to creating the perfect pour over, and that is also for another day!

Look/Style

This set is so slick. The stainless steel is easy to clean which is great because camping makes everything less shiny. This is a classy and well built coffee set. You will be proud making everyone their first cup of the day at your campsite.

Features

One of the features I love is everything in this set packs down into one cloth bag with a pull string. There is a pocket inside the bag to separate items so they don’t scratch each other. The coffee drip breaks down into three separate panels and even the grinder handle tucks under itself — very smooth.

Weight/Packability

The entire weight of this whole set is 935 grams, 33 ounces. I wouldn’t backpack with this set, but it’s great to throw in the back of the car, or for a quick hike to see a sunrise. Below are the individual weights:

Field Barista Kettle: 540 grams
Field Barista Coffee Grinder: 225 grams
Field Barista Coffee Drip: 150 grams

Function/Performance

All three of these items function so well together. This set made a rich cup of coffee.

Durability/Construction

I expect these three items to last for a very long time. They are each constructed from stainless steel and are quite durable. The only thing I can see is the burr grinder dulling after a ton of use, but that’s all burr grinders and not Snow Peak specific.

What sets this product apart?

This product is well designed, durable, and functions well. I think it’s set apart from other coffee sets because it’s beautiful to look at AND easy to use. Form and function in one.

Who is this product for?

This product is for anyone that cares about their cup of coffee in the morning, and enjoys spending time outside. I love making a cup of coffee after hiking to a beach, or reaching a morning summit, and this product is perfect for that.

Room for Improvement

There is only one place where I think the Field Barista Set could improve – the locking knob for the kettle. It is VERY hard to unscrew the first time, and in an awkward position to screw back in. Once you’ve gotten it off the first time it is easier to use, but still cumbersome. The kettle doesn’t fit back into the drawstring bag with the rest of the items with the handle still on there, so if you’re on the move, you have to unscrew it.

The Final Word

The Field Barista set it a pleasure to use. It makes me feel like I’m back at home using my fancy coffee items, even though I’m out adventuring. If you care about coffee, this is a wonderful set to add to your collection.
